Practical Tips For Student Portfolio

October 25, 2016 theteacherbin Leave a Comment

Have you ever wanted to come up with a practical way to include all the memories of a school year? I know I did.  I wanted a way to organize, and keep  memories for my kiddos and their parents. I also  wanted it to be a way I could chart professional growth as in a student portfolio.  With all the demands in the classroom, it was getting harder and harder to accomplish a memory/portfolio.

Practical Tips For A Student Portfolio

I decided I needed to make pre-made pages for my memory/portfolio throughout the year.    This turned out to be a huge time saver and a great resource!

I use a 3 ring binder.  This holds all the sheets of the portfolio throughout the year.

I use plastic protector sheets that the kids put each pre-made sheet into when it is completed. The plastic protectors are  great because throughout the year the kids would look at the portfolio.  This made for less damage to their work.

Ask the kiddos matured they did much of their own writing in the portfolio. This is the piece I liked so well because I could see growth in the writing.

As for the box for  illustrations, I sometimes used a photo or the kiddos would draw the illustration, again I could observe growth.

One of my favorite parts of the portfolio is the two “All about Me” pages.  I fill  it out with each student in my class. It is like a morning interview. I put them up as a bulletin board in the classroom.  I also take their picture and put it up along side the interview.  (The picture becomes the cover of the 3 ringed binder.)

Showing off the Portfolio

I liked the portfolio for conferences too.  It was fun for parents, kiddos and myself to see maturity and improvements in the work.

We had Grandparent’s Day at the end of the school year and they were delighted to see this what their grandchild had done throughout the school year and read what they had written.

My kiddos also had an end of the year ” Parent’s Luncheon” which the portfolio was presented to the parents.
