I have done a Question of the Day for many years and I love it! It’s fun to watch the discussion that goes on as the children are making their decisions. It’s always a very positive experience for the kiddos because they have the power and confidence to make choices. It’s easy to use in my morning work routine. I love the discussion we have during our morning meeting as a result of the Question of the Day!
Morning Work – Question of The Day
All of the Question of the Day questions are relatable to children in the primary grades. They are personal questions about themselves, likes and dislikes, and choice making decisions. I often use the questions that relate to a theme I’m teaching in the classroom.
I use three different types of questions
- Yes-No
- Comparative Questions
- Multiple Choice Questions
How Does It Work?
Question of the Day is one of the morning work routines. The kiddos come into the classroom and take care of their morning routines. One is to answer the question of the day. I have the question strip in a pocket chart and the kids answer the question by putting their “picture” under the Yes or No.
I like using kid pictures at the beginning of the year so the classmates become familiar with each other. I also use first names or last names to answer the questions as the year progresses.
Why do I like question of the day?
- It encourages class discussion during our morning meeting where the kiddos can elaborate on their answer.
- It encourages decision making.
- There is no wrong answer.
- Understanding that a “question” is a way to gather information.
- It can be a “hint” to a topic we may be focusing on that day.
- The kiddos love the question of the day and look forward to it each morning.
