Do you want to kick off the New Year in your classroom? My Workshop is ready to go with activities, games, and art projects. It is a Holiday Workshop it’s a great way to combine math centers, literacy centers, writer’s workshop, and more all in an effective and efficient manner with a twist of holiday fun. Check out this fun way to set up the New Year Workshop in your classroom!
I do workshop every day and have been doing so for my 36 years of teaching.
I love workshop because all the kiddos work at their own pace and always moving forward from job to the next job. The only exception is, before the kiddos can move to the next job I have to see the current job they finished. In other words my eyes see all the kiddos work. I can make corrections, watch letter and number formations, neatness, and accuracy.
Every week or two I have a different theme to my workshop. This week is the New Year Workshop! I’m going to share with you how fast and easy it is to set up the New Year Workshop. I use Workshop in place of math centers, literacy centers, and writing centers, as I find it more effective and efficient. Need to get your workshop set up? New Year Workshop Job 1
Job 1-My New Year School Goal-What I Hope to Learn
This is a New Year’s Resolution writing. Prior to this we have a mini lesson on New Year’s Resolution. We talk about our hopes, wishes for the new school year. The reason I like this as my first job is I want the kiddos to take time and do their best job.
I have rules for the kiddos to follow to complete Job 1.
1. I play music on my I pod, they must work on this project until I stop the music on my I-pod, which is about 7 minutes. In other words the kids can’t get up and say they are done.
2. 5 colors must be used
3. 5 details in the picture
All the kiddos finish with this job at the same time.
New Year Workshop Job 2
Job 2- Minute to Win It Game-Do A Dot.
In the spirit of the holiday, one of the Minute to Win It Games is Job Two in Workshop. This job of course is only a minute, but the kiddos love it. I love to include Holiday Jobs in workshop. For the teacher, lots of fun activities can be included but yet there is order in managing the activities. For the kiddos, lots of fun activities and they don’t skip a beat by accomplishing their jobs.
New Year Workshop Job 3
Job 3-Happy New Year Alphabet Game (Class Game- Alphabet Recognition)
A class game is great, the kiddos love it. The cards say Happy New Year so it can be played all new year. I make this games in different colored card stock. ( 4 to 5 kiddos can play each game). It’s easy to play and I often put it in a “Free Play” tub to play at other times. The cards say Happy New Year so it can be played all new year.
New Year Workshop Job 4
Job 4-Backwards Count and Write Numbers
The game can be played with 2 or 3 dice depending on the ability of you students.Counting backwards is a difficult skill for kiddos. You may want to have this activity a couple of times in Workshop.
New Year Workshop Job 5
Job 5 Make a New Year Kiddo
The cute New Year Kiddo made by the kids has a “Job”, it is responsible for displaying Job Number 1, the new year goal. It is easy to make. My kiddo has the arms up cheering in the new year, but the children can put arms how they would like. Tracing the hand for the project is hard. I tell my kids to find a friend to help trace their hands on paper. I used glitter glue to make the year on the shirt. In order not to have a tiny “year” on the shirt,I would pencil write the number and the kids glitter glue over it.
New Year Workshop Job 6
Job 6 New Year Snack
What is better than making a New Year Snack. The kiddos count out the snack for the day. You may need to adjust the recipe to meet the needs of children with allergies. Make sure the job is WASH HANDS. I have to discuss when you cook
- No hands in mouth
- No tasting food until you finish cooking
- Wait your turn
- Follow the Directions Cards
