Sight Words- Word Work- Colors

It s always about this time of year  I’m  onto the task of recognizing several sight words with my kiddos and color words are a part of the sight words we work on in class.  I want them to start recognizing and spell color words.  ( I don’t really expect them to spell the color words, although there are some kiddo that can.)

The Sight Words-Word Work-Colors  is a great resource to help navigate your kiddos to recognize and learn to spell the color sight words.  I have several activities they can work on individually and with a partner.

Sight Word  Color Practice

Roll and Write a Color Word-A dice game.  The game is a partner game.  The kiddos share a die to play the game.  There is a fun twist in the game.   Roll 1,2,3, 4 and write the word in the correct column.  If a 5 is rolled the kiddo misses a turn and if  the kiddo rolls a 6 it is WILD and any word in a column can be written.  The kiddos love the “Twist” in the game.

Circle the Color Words – Circle the color sight words on the sheet according to their color name.  After all words are circled, count how many words there are of each color.  Use the bar graph and record the color words.  When you are using the color “white” you will have to make a decision how to highlight it.  Either change the paper color or use a pencil to record white.

Cut and Spell Color Words– The kiddos cut out the individual letters and glue the letters to spell the color words. Teacher Tip: I always have kiddos “loose letters”  so I provided a letter sheet to fill in the lost letters.

Fill in the Blanks- Fill in the blanks with color words that answer each sentence.

What is the Color Cards– There are 11 cards with a picture.  Spread cards in the playing area. Look at each picture on the card, what color is shown on the card? Record the color name on the recording sheet by the correct number.  Teacher Tip: *I always make a double set for a class set. 

Write the Color Words in Color– The kiddos write each color word in its own color.  I let them use a marker to write the word.  Again be aware of the white color word.

Color By Number– The kiddos use a number code to color each picture.

Color Search-The kiddos must highlight the color word on each sheet.  Count the highlighted words and record it on a bar graph sheet.

Recognizing and Identifying Color Words

Recognizing colors and identifying their names is an important part of a child’s development.  Color words are often describing words(adjectives) to a noun.  The following are cues I give the kiddos for learning color words.

• Beginning sounds
• ending sounds
• double consonants
• word length and formation

I love using the Sight Words-Word Work-Colors in March.  It goes along so well with my St. Patrick’s Day – Workshop,  rainbows, and Leprechauns.

Sight Words-Word Work-Colors works perfect as one of my  jobs for  Workshop.  Workshop allows me work with several games and activities that are important skills needed by the kiddos.  The Sight Words-Word Work-Colors  in workshop gives the kiddos the practice  they need in discriminating the short sounds of vowels.
