Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and I love this special day because the kiddos are so sweet and kind to each other. If you want some great activities for Workshop, here is Valentine Workshop – Friendship! It has a 5 day Friendship Unit and it’s full of “friend” math and literacy activities.
I do Workshop every day and have been doing so for my 36 years of teaching.
I love workshop because all the kiddos work at their own pace and always moving forward from job to the next job. The only exception is, before the kiddos can move to the next job I have to see the current job they finished. In other words my eyes see all the kiddos work. I can make corrections, watch letter and number formations, neatness, and accuracy.
Every week or two I have a different theme to my workshop. This week is Valentine Workshop-Friendship I’m going to share with you how fast and easy it is to set up my Valentine Workshop-Friendship. I use Workshop in place of math centers and literacy centers as I find it more effective and efficient. Need to get your workshop set up? Valentine Workshop-Friendship Job 1
Job 1-Friendship Book
The Friendship Book is job number one. The idea of the book is the kiddos will choose different kiddos around the classroom that can be one of the characters in the book. The reason I like this as my first job is I want the kiddos to take time and do their best job. The Valentine Friendship Book is 12 pages, the kiddos will be working on this for several days.
I have rules for the kiddos to follow to complete Job 1.
1. I play music on my I pod, they must work on this project until I stop the music on my I-pod, which is about 7 minutes. In other words the kids can’t get up and say they are done.
2. 5 colors must be used
3. 5 details in the picture
All the kiddos finish with this job at the same time.

Job 2-Cover-Up Coin Game
The coin cover-up game is a partner game. The coin spinners are available, but a die can be used too. ( I just make 2 nickels and 2 dimes on the cube.) Each kiddo must use a color different from each other to cover -up the board spaces. I often laminate or put the board in a protector sheet and then the kiddos can use cubes or small items to claim the coin spaces.

Valentine Workshop-Friendship Job 3
Job 3- CVC Cards(Missing Beginning and Ending Letters)
There are 24 CVC cards with beginning and ending letters, I usually copy two sets. ( Laminate and cute out the cards.) Lay the cards face up in the playing area. The kiddos pick up a card sound out the first sound and the last sound of each picture card and print the word on the recording sheet with the corresponding number. When all six words are written the kiddo is finished.
There is another set of CVC cards, but the vowel is missing. This more difficult so I always start with the beginning and ending sound.

Valentine Workshop-Friendship Job 4
Job 4- Hearts – Add them Up
There are 8 heart boards and dotted half hearts to match the heart on the heart board. One set of hearts is the “number 1+ dots hearts” and the other is “mixed dots hearts”. Choose what’s best for your group. The kiddos match 2 half hearts to one whole heart on the playing board. Each heart on the board must have 2 half hearts.

Valentine Workshop-Friendship Job 5
Job 5- Letter Order
The kiddos put mixed up alphabet letters in order on a grid. The first letter for each row is starred*. They glue the letters down. When I do this activity I usually have the kiddos only do 2 or 3 rows at a time. It goes back into workshop the next day.

Job 6- Heart Quilt
The “Heart Quilt” is a project by everyone in the class to work together to make a paper quilt. It is simple, but very cute. The hearts are a 6×6 pattern to trace on paper. After decorating them with “Fancy strips of papers”, they are glued on a 9×9 paper. You may want to decide on the number of strips you want on the heart.
